Pan American Highway - Going again in 2017!!

Traveling in diesel truck camper from Texas to Argentina in July 2017....

I have decided to "get ready" early and do my pre-trip preparation for this great journey thru Mexico, Central America, and South America. I am using a excellent low-milage Ford F250 , 7.3 diesel, long bed pick up with a LANCE SELF CONTAINED camper on it. I have installed 12v/110 inverter, 120v/220 inverter, Solar, Renewed all the vent covers, hatch, fridge vent, and completely resealed the roof and edges.

Still finding things to do.... being a "Velcro" maniac...velcroing everything including the toothpaste to the cabinets..around the stove the lighter, salt, pepper, and the coffee creamer... lol

Free Camping in Antigua - NOT really "Camping" anymore!

PN - Policia National Civil don't really care about the traveler like they used to!

overcast 17 °C

The old Policia de Turismo facility located near the bus terminal used to be a nice place to spend a few days and see the tourist sites in Antigua. Now its ok to stop for a day, but all the RV accomodations have been suspended - No bathrooms or showers, no clothes washing, or is there good parking like previously.

YOU ARE PERMITTED TO STAY ONLY IF YOU HAVE A SELF-CONTAINED UNIT. No tents, or vans.

It is a living facility for the Police - the bathrooms are ONLY for their use. Even though it is the "tourist police" they do not attend the camping tourist, except to hand you the rules, and register you upon arrival. If you stop for a day there, please contact the INGUAT (tourist dept) representive and let him know your experiences. They may help you.

A good "base camp" with all facilities and hot springs is AUTOMARISCOS TURICENTRO located across the mountain from Volcan Agua in Palin.

Hot Springs-Camping-Natural Park Amatitlan, Guatemala

The "Automariscos Camping" is the best camping we have encountered from Alaska to Ushuaia, Argentina. Makes to want to stay longer or come back to!!!

sunny 18 °C

This is the TripAdvisor review:

“Natural Hot Springs, Camping for RV and Tents - best in the Americas”
5 of 5 starsReviewed March 22, 2015
From Alaska to Argentina, driving the Pan AMerica Highway in a RV, we have never encountered such a paradise campground. Seafood Restaurant, Olympic Swimming Pool, 5 smaller pools, jacuzzi, vapor baths, picnic tables, barbeques, shelters, full hook ups for RVs, and free high speed WI-Fi.... what more!!!

Was a OK review but was missing many of the highlights here:

The Automariscos camp is located at km 33.8 of the CA-9 highway, known as Carreterra Al Pacifico. the altitude here is 1400m which provides a all-year perfect weather and low humidity (55%). Temperatures are usually 15c nights and 22c days (no need for a/c). There is space for 40+ RV, but only 10 have full hookups (elect/water/sewer) and also each space has a nice shelter, with table, elect fan, and barbeque grill.

The water is alway warm to hot..fed by underground volcanic springs which also heat the vapor baths, jacuzzi, and the many thermal pools.

THIS IS A IDEAL BASE CAMP TO SEE GUATEMALA, WITH SECURITY, AND IS THE CLOSEST LOCATION TO START YOUR CLIMB TO PACAYA VOLCANO. EXCELLENT BUS SERVICE TO ANYWHERE IN GUATEMALA. 34 KMS TO THE CAPITAL CITY, AND ABOUT THE SAME TO ANTIGUA. TOUR BUSES WILL PICK YOU UP HERE IF YOU WISH TO USE THEM.

LOCAL ATTRACTION: Worlds largest Cieba Tree located just 5 kms in the market of PALIN....fresh veggie and fruits too.

Be sure to include this camp on your itinerary.
